Connie was my childhood friend. We grew up together in the same neighborhood and went to all the same schools. Although Connie and I were not close in high school, it was a terrible blow to me to learn of her death at just 20 years old. Connie had married her husband, Larry Meeks (also a WHS graduate) in the fall of our senior year, and then as soon as she graduated she went to Germany to join him, where he was serving in the Army. They had an infant son, Scottie, in 1971. Later that year in November Connie and Larry left their little boy with a babysitter and then set out on a road trip. Tragically, they both died in a car crash on a German autobahn. Their remains were brought back to the U.S. and after a joint funeral they were buried together in Rock Island National Cemetery.

Connie's mother and stepdad, Mary and Norman Davis, raised Scottie. He eventually married and now has several children -- and I think even a grandchild -- in Davenport. (I've kept in touch with Mary Davis over the years.)

Connie was a very kind and loving girl who left us far too soon. Even after nearly four decades she is greatly missed.

Connie an I were in the same Campfire group from 1st grade to 12th grade. When she and Larry died I was crushed. My mom and Mary(her Mom) kept in touch untill the time my Mom passed away. I remember her often.
