JoAnn (Carter) Johnson

 BETTENDORF — JoAnn (Carter) Johnson, 58, of Bettendorf, affectionally known to her friends as “Jo Mama” passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 12, 2009, 10 a.m. in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation was 4-8 p.m., Friday, September 11, 2009 at the mortuary. Burial was in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Gilda’s Club.

JoAnn was born November 21, 1950, in Davenport, the daughter of Verdon and Gwendolyn (Fry) Carter. JoAnn married Ross Johnson on May 18, 1974, in East Moline. JoAnn worked the last 19 years at KWQC TV-6. Prior to that she worked at Massachusetts Mutual Insurance. She volunteered for Big Brothers and Big Sisters, American Cancer Society, Junior Achievement and Gilda’s Club. She started the area’s first Gynecological Support Group and was Honorary Chair for the 2003 Scott County Relay for Life. JoAnn loved life, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Those left to honor her memory include children and spouses, Melissa “Missy” (Johnson) Wright and her husband, Warren, Bettendorf, and Ryan Johnson and his wife, Nicole; two grandchildren, Alexa and Rilan, Davenport; mother, Gwendolyn Carter, Davenport; siblings, Jack Carter (wife Margaret Ann) Letts, Iowa, Duane “Dee” Carter (wife Joyce), Muscatine, John Carter (wife Sue), Davenport, Carolyn Bennett (husband Ben), Bernard, Iowa, Alan Carter (wife Margaret), Blue Grass, Iowa, Ken Carter (wife Pam), Sparta, Wis., Les Carter, Davenport, and Jennifer Carter Vonk (husband Steve), St. Joseph, Michigan; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Darla Evans and Wil Rogers; her dog, Tre. She was preceded in death by Verdon Carter, Donna Jean Carter, Diana Johnson and her dog, Scruffy.

The family would especially like to thank the staff and nurses at Dr. Kovach’s office, the infusion center, and the nurses on the oncology unit that provided such compassionate care over the years.

I remember roller skating with Jo Ann on Friday nights in the early '60's. She was such fun and so full of life. It was a wonderful time to be young and innocent. I will always remember Jo Ann with great fondness.
